A traditional chin implant procedure usually takes about 30 minutes to complete. The surgery involves placing the implant — usually silicone, polyethylene, or Gore-Tex — into the chin through a minimal incision made by Dr. Trovato either inside the mouth or on the natural crease line beneath the chin. To achieve the longest-lasting results, chin implants may be fastened to the bone using screws. Otherwise, the implant will be placed in a pocket next to the bone.

After chin augmentation, most patients usually feel discomfort in the treatment site, which can be alleviated by pain medication.

Since the chin has increased in volume due to the implant, swelling is a natural occurrence after the surgery. You’ll feel tightness in the area for about two weeks. In most cases, surgical tape will be applied over the area to keep the implant in place as well as to control the swelling post-surgery. If the implant has been placed through an incision in the mouth, you’ll have to adopt a soft diet and keep the stitches very clean for the first few days of recovery.
